YRC Driver Is Company's Newest 4-Million Miler [01.22.2009]

Bob Seeman

Bob Seeman insists the decal on the side of his tractor  is not about him. Our newest 4-million-miler says it's really a message to other professional drivers: "If you stick with it, you can do it."

Bob has stuck with it since joining Roadway in November 1975, logging 4 million miles this month. Interestingly, the Valdosta, Ga., road driver says he never set a goal to drive even 1 million miles accident-free. His objective was simply "to work."

But he always understood his job required more. "You need to have respect for and fear of the job. It's a serious business," he said.

To meet his objective to keep working, he took safety seriously. He explained, "Safety is an attitude. Make sure your unit is ready. Why leave the yard with failure on the way?"

On the road, Bob knows there's only one chance for safety. "Every move needs to be calculated. You don't have a second opportunity to be safe."

He reminds his colleagues, "You test your skills every day but nobody is watching."

To get the recognition all professional drivers deserve, he encourages participation in the truck driving championships.

Before moving to Valdosta, Bob was based at Roadway service centers in Nashville, Tenn.; Lincoln, Neb.; and Toledo, Ohio.

At every location, Bob realized the contributions of employees in the garage, on the dock, and in the office were essential to his success on the road.

After a celebration to honor his achievement at the Valdosta service center, he said, "It's important to learn to work together. We're all linked, and it's a team effort."
